Liposuction of the Calf and Ankle

Treatment of the calf and ankle was first performed as early as 1964 by Dr. Schrudde. He strategically made small incisions around the ankle and used a sharp curettage to shape and contour the area. In 1977 Dr. Illouz recommended suctioning deep layers of fat as opposed to curettage. In 1982 a case using both suction and sharp curette on the ankle was reported by Dr. Teimourian and Dr. Fisher. It wasn't until 1994 that superficial liposuction was popularized by Dr. Gasperoni and Dr. Salgarello. Today, the use of internal ultrasound-assisted liposuction for the upper half of the lower leg is the latest technique in the limelight.
